Gaikwad’s Breakthrough ODI Century Puts India in Command Against South Africa

Ruturaj Gaikwad struck his maiden ODI century and, alongside Virat Kohli’s unbeaten ton, powered India to 276/3 in the second ODI against South Africa in Raipur. Their 195-run stand rescued India from early losses and set a challenging 277-run target as the hosts pushed for a series-clinching win.

Ruturaj Gaikwad produced a career-defining performance in Raipur on Saturday, striking his maiden ODI century to steer India to a commanding total in the second one-day international against South Africa at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh Stadium. Coming under pressure after early wickets, Gaikwad’s fluent 105 off 83 balls laid the foundation for India’s 276 for three in 38.1 overs after South Africa opted to bowl first.

India’s innings began on uneven footing as Rohit Sharma fell for 22 and Yashasvi Jaiswal departed for 14, leaving the hosts momentarily unsettled. The momentum shifted dramatically once Gaikwad settled in. Displaying crisp timing and controlled aggression, he struck 12 fours and two sixes to keep the scoring rate buoyant. His composure paved the way for a formidable 195-run third-wicket partnership with Virat Kohli, who remained unbeaten on a polished 101 from 91 deliveries.

Their stand not only revived India’s innings but also placed South Africa on the back foot for the rest of the match. With dew expected to play a role under lights, the visitors were left facing a challenging chase of 277 on a pitch likely to quicken as the evening progressed. For India, the effort marked a decisive push toward sealing the series, powered by Gaikwad’s milestone knock and Kohli’s assured anchoring.

As the contest moves into its second half, India’s dominant batting display has set the stage for a high-pressure pursuit, one that could shape the series outcome and underline the depth and resilience of India’s evolving ODI setup.
